ISRCs, UPCs and Music Metadata: What Each Identifier Is For
Identifiers are useful operational tools—but they do not replace contracts or copyright records.
The job of each identifier
An ISRC is an identifier for an individual sound recording. A UPC/EAN commonly identifies a release product containing one or more recordings. They help systems distinguish assets, but they describe different levels of a catalogue.
Neither code proves who owns copyright, grants permission to distribute, or resolves a dispute. Keep agreements, invoices, split sheets and source files alongside identifiers.
Metadata is the operational record
Metadata includes titles, artist names, version labels, contributors, dates, genre and identifiers. It travels with a release through delivery and reporting systems. Accurate data reduces avoidable corrections and makes catalogue management more reliable over time.
Do not casually change identifiers for a recording that is being re-delivered unless you understand the consequences. A new identifier can cause services to treat a track as a different asset. Ask your distributor about the correct process for a replacement or correction.
A simple metadata quality check
Before delivery, compare the release sheet to the artwork and master files. Check capitalisation, featured-artist formatting, explicit flags, songwriter information and the intended release date. Have collaborators review credits while corrections are still simple.
After delivery, retain the confirmation, identifiers and final submitted data. This is particularly useful if you later administer the catalogue with a new partner.
