Music Rights Checklist Before You Release, License or Fund a Song
A practical pre-flight list for avoiding preventable rights confusion.
Confirm what you control
Identify the master owner, the composition writers and the party authorised to distribute or license. Store signed agreements, split sheets and permissions in one project folder. If the project has no clear answer, pause before representing that rights are cleared.
For a label, catalogue acquisition or collaboration, build this check into onboarding rather than reconstructing history at release time.
Check third-party material
Samples, interpolations, beats, session performances, artwork, photographs and brand references may each involve separate permissions, licenses or contractual restrictions. “Found online” is not permission. Keep licences and correspondence with the release records.
Cover songs and translations can require permissions, notices or licenses that vary by use and jurisdiction; do not assume a generic cover-song process clears every use. Seek specialist advice rather than relying on a generic checklist.
Keep a living catalogue file
Record identifiers, delivery dates, contributor credits, agreements, statements and claim history. Version the file when a release is replaced or ownership changes. Good administration does not eliminate disputes, but it gives you evidence and a clear starting point.
Use access controls for sensitive agreements and personal details. Share only the relevant documents with a distributor, administrator or adviser.
